This attractive species is one of New Zealand’s endemics. On our early flight season trip, we found it on both islands, often being the one dragonfly amongst the two widespread damselflies, Xanthocnemis zealandica (Common Redcoat) and Austrolestes colensonis (Blue Damselfly).
The twin lines of yellow spots along each side of the abdomen make this species pretty much unmistakable. We never did see one settle so in-flight was the only option for photographs, which happily worked on occasion.
