Who we are
Our website address is: http://www.odonata.org.uk.
This website is an offshoot of http://www.curdhome.co.uk [a.k.a. the Mothership].
Personal data usage
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Subscriptions
Visitors may choose to subscribe to email notifications of postings on this site. To initiate and process subscriptions, the following information is used: subscriber’s email address and the ID of the post or comment (depending on the specific subscription being processed). In the event of a new subscription being initiated, some basic server data may also be collected, including all of the subscribing user’s HTTP request headers, the IP address from which the subscribing user is viewing the page, and the URI which was given in order to access the page (REQUEST_URI
and DOCUMENT_URI
). This server data is used for the exclusive purpose of monitoring and preventing abuse and spam.
When a user acknowledges their subscription (which is notified via an email requiring a response), their email address will be held in WordPress.com in order to control the sending of notifications by email.
Prior to the advent of the WordPress emailing service, a few historical subscriptions and, therefore, email addresses were collected by and are still processed by Feedburner.
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
Analytics
We use StatCounter, an online service, to help us better understand our visitors; for example, how visitors find our website, how long they spend on our site, which web pages they are most interested in etc. We use Statcounter mainly for pure interest but also because better understanding how visitors are interacting with our website may help us to improve the content, design and functionality of the site.
Statcounter uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on visitors and visitor activity on our website. These data include:
Time and date of visit
IP address (a numerical label assigned to a device by an ISP to enable the device to access the Internet)
Browser and Operating System (this can help us to make sure that our website functions correctly in the browsers/operating systems used to access our site)
Device Information e.g. device type and screen size (this can help this website function correctly in the devices used to access it)
Referring Data e.g. a search engine link (this can help us to understand which search engines are helping visitors to find our website)
Furthermore, when you visit our website a Statcounter cookie (called “is_unique”) may be placed in your browser. This cookie is used only to determine whether you are a first-time or returning visitor and to estimate unique visits to the site.
You can learn more about cookies from StatCounter and set your browser to refuse same by clicking here.
Sharing of data
We do not share any personal data with any other third parties, save for the subscriptions and analytics software mentioned above.
Retention of data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
If you subscribe to an email feed of our content, your email address is retained at WordPress.com until such time as you delete your subscription, the process for which is described in the following section.
Removal of data
Should a visitor who has supplied their email address in order to subscribe to email notification of content subsequently wish to unsubscribe and remove their email, this may be done by visiting subscribe.wordpress.com and following the relevant instructions.
Prior to the advent of the WordPress enailing service, a few historical subscriptions were collected by and are still processed by Feedburner. If you wish to unsubscribe but cannot find a subscription in WordPress.com (as described above), this is most likely the reason. In this case, use the Contact page on the Mothership, http://www.curdhome.co.uk, to send a request for removal and we will action it for you, with sadness to see you go, of course. 😉
Where data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
Subscription email addresses are sent to WordPress.com as mentioned above.
Non personal data for all visits to this website are sent to StatCounter.
