Austrogomphus cornutus (Unicorn Hunter) is quite wide-ranging over eastern Australia, missing only from the northern tip of Queensland. I’ll attempt to paraphrase the identification points made in Theischinger/Hawking below.
I recorded just a single encounter with this species during my 2019 Queensland trip, though my colleagues have noted two, and different locations at that. My single individual was photographed at the Rock Pool just outside Carnarvon Gorge.
Id notes
- ♂ – occipital triangle greatly swollen
- ♂ – white anal appendages tapering evenly to a sharp point
- antehumeral stripe fused with collar
- dorsal side of S10 black
