This beast has to have the most unusual looking anal appendages I’ve ever seen. I thought our European Onychogomphus species were odd but this takes the biscuit. I can only describe these appendages as resembling stag’s antlers.
We saw only one individual on our Odonatours 2019 Queensland trip but fortunately it was a male; an immature male very freshly emerged. E. intermedius is known only from the Eungella area which is where we were, actually in Finch Hatton Gorge, so seeing one at all was a privilege.
Lighting conditions were decidedly tricky, as was focusing given the narrow subject and confused background, but I just about managed to get a few shots that demonstrate the shape of those appendages.
