Ictinogomphus australis (Australian Tiger) ranges around about half of the Australian coast, from the Kimberley region in the northwest to south-eastern New South Wales in the southeast, inhabiting rives, riverine lagoons, lakes and ponds. It is also recorded from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
Ictinogomphus species are one of my loves – they look like perfect killing machines – so I was very pleased to get several chances to photograph Ictinogomphus australis (Australian Tiger) on our 2019 Queensland trip. We certainly encountered it in a wide variety of habitats, including my favourite, the Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane. FNQ 2022 added to the collection but I still don’t have a female.
