We were very pleased to find this striking creature in Cambodia at Angkor Thom, especially because it doesn’t occur in Singapore. Since I had no Cambodian Odonata information, it remained a mystery until a friend identified it from a Facebook post. What it is to have the Internet and friends – great stuff!
The wings of the male often (maybe most often?) have a white band of varying width outboard of the black area, hence the “Pied” bit of the vernacular name. In Cambodia, they seemed to be plain black, though. We found another couple in Sri Lanka in 2019 and those males had their black wing patch edged in white.
