Tetrathemis polleni (Black-splashed Elf)

The common name will appear curious given our sole example from Livingstone, Zambia, on our 2022 wildlife safari. Normally, the mature males have black bands on their wings extending to the wing node, though immatures and females do not. A few mature males, like ours, also do not.

This was a welcome find on our 2022 July safari trip, mainly to Botswana.

Id Notes

  • ♂ – blue thorax and abdomen
  • ♂ – stunning green eyes
  • ♂ – [normally] black outer wing panels
